Sioux Falls Parks & Recreation is pleased to partner with Special Olympics South Dakota for a session of Young Athletes-Strider. This is an innovative program gives kids ages 2 to 5 the opportunity to get the feel for riding a bike with the comfort of their feet on the ground. Bikes will be provided. Helmets are required, so please bring your own.

If you are planning on competing in the Youth Triathlon, or just want to learn what it’s all about, check out our training class. You can practice your swimming, biking, and running skills while getting tips on how to improve. The three-day, one-hour sessions run August 8th, 9th, and 10th, and the cost is $20 per person.

  • Kids ages 6-9will come to camp from 10-11 a.m.
  • Kids ages 10-18 will come to camp from 11 a.m.-12 Noon.

Snowfox Swim Team, Avera Sports Institute Tri Group, and Two Wheeler Dealer will be on site to assist with training. Bring your swimsuit, towel, bike, helmet, and running shoes each day. Two Wheeler Dealer will be at the training to help with free basic bike fits and bike safety checks.

  • Tuesday’s class will focus on swimming and practice on transitioning to bike.
  • Wednesday’s class will focus on bike etiquette, riding the bike route, and transitioning to the run.
  • Thursday’s class will focus on transitioning from the bike and running the race route.

The Sioux Falls Parks and Recreation Youth Triathlon, cosponsored by Wellmark Blue Cross and Blue Shield, is for kids and teenagers between 6 and 18 years of age at Kuehn Park Pool and Kuehn Park beginning at 9a.m.

The early registration fee is $10, due by 5 p.m. on August 1. Participants who register by August 1 will receive a free race T-shirt. Registrations will be accepted on race day for a fee of $15. Wellmark has established a scholarship fund to help defray the cost for those who cannot afford the cost of the entry fee. Packet pickup and setup begins at 9 a.m.

Prizes will be awarded to the top three male and female finishers in each age division. Chip timing will be used for all groups, giving athletes split and overall times. Bring your swimsuit, towel, bike, helmet, and running shoes.

Vehicle Parking and Access
Use Kuehn Park Pool lot entrance to drop off participants and equipment. Kuehn Park Pool lot will be ADA parking only. Please use Sioux Falls First Church lot at 41st Street and Kuehn Park Road or use the Kuehn Community Center lot at 2801 South Valley View Road. No parking will be allowed in the Kuehn Golf Course parking lot.

Outdoor Adventure Camp

Location: Family Park and Great Bear Recreation Park

Studies have shown that the average American youth spends as few as 30 minutes in unstructured outdoor play each day and more than 7 hours each day in front of an electronic screen. Come battle this statistic while participating in fun outdoor activities throughout various Sioux Falls parks. Fish at Family park, learn archery skills from The Outdoor Campus instructors at Great Bear, discover outdoor safety skills, and explore hiking trails during this exciting camp. Please wear sturdy shoes and bring a full water bottle each day. Class location details will be released upon registration.

Registration for this event is $25 per person for the camp. In order to register, go to www.siouxfalls.org/parks and use id#140088 or call (605) 367-8222. Registration deadline is 5 days in advance.

Sioux Falls Parks & Recreation is pleased to partner with Special Olympics South Dakota for a session of Young Athletes-Strider. This is an innovative program gives kids ages 2 to 5 the opportunity to get the feel for riding a bike with the comfort of their feet on the ground. Bikes will be provided. Helmets are required, so please bring your own.

FREE program, but registration is required. Registration closes five business days in advance.

Better Choices, Better Health® Workshop

Location: Avera Medical Group Family Health Center, 2100 S Marion Road

Better Choices, Better Health® SD is a chronic disease self-management workshop designed for adults living with any chronic conditions.

This workshop will be presented on six consecutive Tuesdays, from July 11 to August 15, with each session lasting 2 1/2 hours. 

Workshop topics include:

  • Tips for healthy eating
  • Personal exercise plans

Furry 5K

Furry 5K

Location: Riverdale Park

Dogs that are exercised regularly are less likely to develop and exhibit those pesky behavior problems such as digging, barking, and chewing. Help your pooch get the exercise they need by partaking in the 5K fun run or walk on National Dog Day! Participants and their furry companions will follow a 5K route along the beautiful bike trail. Dogs must be kept on a leash. First 25 people to register will receive a free T-shirt. Don't have a dog? Come enjoy the walk or run anyway! Race starts at 9 am.

The cost for this activity is $10 per person.
