Strengthening Families 10-14 Program

Strengthening Families 10-14 Program

Location: Carroll Institute, 310 South 1st Avenue

Strengthening Families is a 7-week program for families with students ages 10-14.

The program centers on strengthening communication and family bonds. Students also work on how to deal with peer pressure, and adults learn to set limits with their children, while still showing love. The program is running February 8, 15, 22 & March 1, 8, 15, & 22.

The evening starts at 5:30 pm with a meal where we come together and eat as families (meal included with program cost).  The youth and adults separate from 6:00-7:00 and work on areas more specific to them and then come back together as families from 7:00-8:00 to learn more about each other and have fun together!

American Public Health Association 1 Billion Steps Challenge

American Public Health Association 1 Billion Steps Challenge

Location: Sioux Falls

Join us in getting physically active this year! We have joined the American Public Health Association's 1 Billion Steps Challenge. This challenge runs from January 1 to April 8. The 1 Billion Steps Challenge is a chance to count your steps and get active in 2018. Join our team as we attempt to Live Well and get as many steps as we can. Location: SDSU Extension Regional Center, 2001 E 8th St, Sioux Falls, SD 57103(Located in the same building as South Dakota School for the Deaf)

Want to eat healthier, but not sure where to start, or unsure if you can afford to eat healthier? If your answer is yes, then this class is for you! Join us for a class learning how to stretch your food dollars, while also making healthier choices for you and your family. We will learn more about nutrition and healthy lifestyle choices; simple ways to increase physical activity; attend a grocery store tour and learn ways to save money when purchasing groceries; learn about tasty, simple ways to prepare a variety of fruits and vegetables; and learn basic skills regarding cooking and food safety. In a fun, welcoming group environment, meet others who are experiencing similar struggles and challenges and learn how you can overcome those barriers. Every class includes cooking (and eating) a fun and tasty new recipe! Additional FREE healthy eating incentives provided for those who attend. Sign up today and take the first step to living a healthier lifestyle and reaching your nutrition and health goals!

Beat the Blues Winter Marathon: Moonlight Mile Celebration

Location: The Outdoor Campus, 4500 S. Oxbow Avenue, in Sertoma Park

To celebrate the end of our Beat the Blues Winter Marathon activity, we're meeting at The Outdoor Campus for a Moonlight Mile Walk on Friday, March 2.

There will be a full moon that night so - weather permitting -  you can get out and walk (or maybe snowshoe) in the moonlight!

Bring your completed Marathon Mileage forms, and we'll be doing some drawings for prizes and enjoying healthy snacks.

Location: Kenny Anderson Community Center

Sioux Falls Parks & Recreation is pleased to partner with Special Olympics South Dakota for Young Athletes-Strider Program. This program gives kids ages 2-6 years old the opportunity to get the feel for riding a bike with the comfort of their feet on the ground. Bikes will be provided. Helmets are required; please bring your own. 

This is a FREE program, but registration is required. Registration closes five business days in advance.

Ride, run, jump, and jam! Join Sioux Falls Parks and Recreation and participate in fitness-related activities all while having fun! This event is geared toward children ages 2-6. Children must be supervised by an individual 16 years of age or older. A 5-to-1 ratio of children to adults must be observed. No Registration required. This is a FREE event.

These classes will introduce your child to basic movement skills and encourage them to work on hand/eye coordination and spatial awareness. Parachutes, balls and other fun activities will be used. The cost is $5 per class.

What is a Wibit®? A Wibit®  is an inflatable water feature that can be used in the water to create additional fun for all ages! Midco® Aquatic Center will host Wibit®  events. These events will be held in the 50 Meter Pool. Present an active swim pass or pay the daily admission rate. Action Tower & Wiggle Bridge will be available. Lap lanes may not be available when the Action Tower is in use.

Sioux Falls Parks & Recreation is pleased to partner with Special Olympics South Dakota for Young Athletes-Strider Program. This program gives kids ages 2-6 years old the opportunity to get the feel for riding a bike with the comfort of their feet on the ground. Bikes will be provided. Helmets are required; please bring your own.

Strengthening Families 10-14 Program

Strengthening Families 10-14 Program

Location: Carroll Institute, 310 South 1st Avenue

Strengthening Families is a 7-week program for families with students ages 10-14.

The program centers on strengthening communication and family bonds. Students also work on how to deal with peer pressure, and adults learn to set limits with their children, while still showing love. The program is running February 8, 15, 22 & March 1, 8, 15, & 22.

The evening starts at 5:30 pm with a meal where we come together and eat as families (meal included with program cost).  The youth and adults separate from 6:00-7:00 and work on areas more specific to them and then come back together as families from 7:00-8:00 to learn more about each other and have fun together!

Want to eat healthier, but not sure where to start, or unsure if you can afford to eat healthier? If your answer is yes, then this class is for you! Join us for a class learning how to stretch your food dollars, while also making healthier choices for you and your family. We will learn more about nutrition and healthy lifestyle choices; simple ways to increase physical activity; attend a grocery store tour and learn ways to save money when purchasing groceries; learn about tasty, simple ways to prepare a variety of fruits and vegetables; and learn basic skills regarding cooking and food safety. In a fun, welcoming group environment, meet others who are experiencing similar struggles and challenges and learn how you can overcome those barriers. Every class includes cooking (and eating) a fun and tasty new recipe! Additional FREE healthy eating incentives provided for those who attend.
