16 For ‘16:  Your Health “To Do” List for the New Year

16 For ‘16:  Your Health “To Do” List for the New Year

It's almost two weeks into 2016...and chances are most of us have been thinking about a health goal we'd like to achieve this year.

It could be something related to a big event, like running a first marathon. Or, it could be something as simple as trying to get one more glass of water in each day.

To get you started, we've created 16 in '16Download this health "to do" list of 16 things you can do to make 2016 a healthy year.

Change is hard, and it can be overwhelming unless we take it a step at a time. Break down larger goals into smaller, tasks.

For example, if you want to cook more at home, start by writing a meal plan for just two nights a week. Then write out the list of groceries you'll need for those two meals.  You can build on your planning, and soon you'll be writing a week's worth of healthy meal ideas (and don't forget to pack those leftovers for a healthy lunch at work!).

Use post-it notes to write your goals - keep them where you'll see them - and each day, pull one of the notes and carry it with you as a reminder to complete your task for the day. Or, simply write motivational notes to yourself and leave them posted where you can be reminded that you are worth the effort!

Schedule time for your "to do" list activities. Whether you are a fan of the old fashioned paper calendar or keep everything on your smart phone, block off time for exercise or for relaxation. Schedule a set time where you will make the calls to set up your health, eye and dental check-ups (tip: schedule all of them in your birthday month, and then you'll remember when to follow-up each year!).

Find a buddy.  If you need a little extra support and motivation, enlist the help of a family member or friend. Have a neighbor or coworker swing by and "pick you up" for a walk.  If you are trying to quit smoking, confide in someone you trust so that you always know that extra support is just a call, text or email away. Get a group of friends and volunteer together for a local charity.

And, don't forget our resources right here at new.new.livewellsiouxfalls.org. Maybe you want to start with a basic health risk assessment or review what health screenings you need. Or, perhaps you want to browse through our Recipe Center or Tips to Quit Smoking. We can help you get started with a physical activity routine or find healthy events happening in the area.

All it takes to get on the road to better health is a single step. So why not start today on your 16 in '16 to do list?
