Better Breakfast Month

We’ve all heard the saying, “Breakfast is the most important meal of the day.” But, is it true? The answer: Yes! Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Not only does it help fuel our bodies for the rest of the day but it also helps to keep us focused, decrease cravings and overall gets us started on the right foot.

September is Better Breakfast Month and its back-to-school for many of us which means we are in a hurry and may not have time to make a gigantic breakfast. That’s okay! There are so many healthy breakfast options that take very little time but will still get you out the door on the right foot and with a healthy start. Here are some suggestions for quick and easy breakfasts for those busy mornings:

Overnight Oats: These are quite popular lately and it is probably because they are both delicious and easy. Another positive to this choice—there are endless flavor possibilities. Just add ½ cup oats, ½ cup low-fat milk or milk-alternative and ¼ cup Greek yogurt to a jar. Then add your favorite flavor. You really can’t go wrong with these. If you want to up the nutrition even more add chia or flax seeds. Put the jar in the refrigerator overnight and voila, breakfast is ready.

Smoothies: This is a great on-the-go breakfast. To your blender add your favorite fruit (fresh or frozen), milk or Greek yogurt, protein powder and any extras such as flax, chia, vanilla, cinnamon etc. Blend it up and you are ready to go.

Egg Muffins: The varieties in this breakfast are endless and delicious! Add your favorite combo of cheese, veggies and protein. Make these ahead of time and freeze. Then, place in microwave to heat.

Yogurt Parfait: A breakfast classic that is packed full of good nutrition. Use Greek yogurt to increase the protein and help keep you full longer. Add in a low-sugar granola and your favorite fruit and you’re all set.

Banana Roll-Up: A fan-favorite for kids and adults. Take a whole wheat tortilla and spread natural peanut butter on it then, place a peeled banana on top and roll-up. Eat it as a to-go breakfast or as a delicious snack!
