Grocery Store Tour Kickoff

Dec 01, 2016

Grocery Store Tour Kickoff

Live Well Sioux Falls has partnered with other local organizations to provide free healthy grocery store tours to low-income residents. This collaboration was made possible by a grant from Share Our Strength’s No Kid Hungry campaign, a national effort focused on improving access to healthy food for all kids. Partner organizations involved in recruiting participants include Urban Indian Health, South Dakota Department of Health WIC Program  (WIC), Department of Social Services, Lutheran Social Services, and SDSU Extension. Falls Community Health patients are also being offered this opportunity.

“These grocery store tours will help shoppers learn key skills to eat a healthy diet on a budget,” said Stan Kogan, Health Promotion Specialist at Live Well Sioux Falls. Some of the core topics covered during the tours include:

Those who complete the tour will receive a $10 challenge, which will allow them to put their new skills to use by purchasing one item from every food group for under $10. Participants will take home a reusable grocery bag with a booklet that includes recipes and shopping tips, as well as the $10 worth of groceries they picked out during the challenge.

Tours will be led by volunteers from the Sioux Falls Food Council, Hy-Vee dietitians, and SDSU dietetic students. Available tour locations include local Hy-Vee stores, Walmart stores, Fareway Foods, Sunshine Foods, and the Co-op Natural Foods Store.

For more information or to register for a grocery store tour, please contact Stan Kogan at (605) 367-8031 or at skogan@siouxfalls.org.
