Healthy Community Design

The environment around us can impact our health. That is why Live Well Sioux Falls is working to make the healthy choice the easy choice.

Mark Fenton Leads a Walk Audit in Sioux FallsWe are working with others in the community to create opportunities for physical activity, healthy food access, transportation choices, social engagement, reducing bicyclist, pedestrian and motorist injuries, and accessibility for all incomes and abilities.

The physical design of our community affects us each time we step out the front door. Sometimes making healthy choices is not easy...being physically active is hard if you do not have access to sidewalks or parks, and eating right is hard if healthy foods are not available.

What Are Complete Streets?
If the term Complete Streets is new to you, the basic definition is streets that are for everyone. Complete streets are designed to enable safe access for all users - motorists, pedestrians, bicyclists and transit users - and of all ages and abilities. Complete streets make it easier to get where you are going, whether you are walking to school, biking to work or walking or biking to the bus stop.

There are many benefits to adopting a complete streets approach, including encouraging physical activity, boosting economic vitality and improving safety for all users of the road.

Sioux Falls now has a Complete Streets Policy that prioritizes early consideration of pedestrian, bicycle, and transit accommodations in planning for roadway projects. This includes the use of a Complete Streets Checklist.
