Taking Care of Your Mental Health During the Holidays
Dec 06, 2021
It’s the holiday season – with colorful lights, music and gatherings with family and friends. But for some, this season can also bring stress or sadness. Here are a few tips to make the season a little more merry and bright:
- Stick to a healthy routine. Try eating healthy and exercising regularly.
- Stay hydrated! Caffeinated or alcoholic beverages can actually dehydrate you…so keep drinking your water!
- Take time for you. Even though this is a time to be with family and friends, sometimes you just need time for yourself. Whether it’s taking a walk, listening to music, or reading a book, find an activity you enjoy that helps you “de-stress” and boost your mood.
- Money can be a huge stressor, so take care of your financial health by making a budget to help you stay accountable during the holidays.
- Get your sleep – it’s important for your physical and mental health.
Are You Feeling Overwhelmed? Ask yourself the following questions:
- Am I feeling tired or run down most of the time?
- Am I having difficulty remembering things?
- Am I eating more or less to cope with my feelings?
- Am I feeling more irritable or moody?
- Do I have new aches or pains?
- Am I isolating myself from others?
- Am I procrastinating or putting off important tasks?
- Do I feel overwhelmed?
- Do I have a general sense of sadness or unhappiness?
- Am I having anxious or racing thoughts?
If you answered yes to more than 4 of the questions, you are likely experiencing increased stress levels. Consider reaching out to a family member, friend, or a professional like a counselor or your health care provider. You’re not alone, so don’t wait to reach out to someone for help.
