Be Careful Out There! #MoveWell Tips for Winter Weather
Nov 23, 2015
Our area didn't get a chance to ease into winter weather with the recent snowstorm, so chances are, you have already had your first experience of the season either driving or walking on snow and ice.
As we move into this wintry time of year, here are some important tips to help you #MoveWell when there is snow or ice on the ground.
Walking on Snow and Ice
- Wear stable shoes or boots with good tread on the bottom.
- Walk slowly and deliberately, take short steps or shuffle to help you keep your balance.
- Be prepared for a fall. If you feel yourself losing your footing, relax as much as possible AND bend your head forward as you fall backward so you won't hit your head .
- Watch for slippery floors when entering and exiting buildings.
- Avoid carrying items in your arms. Use a backpack or carry your bag cross-body if you can. Keep hands empty so arms are free to move for stabilization.
Driving on Snow and Ice
- Take your time and go slow. Other drivers can pressure you...don't let them. As the old adage says, "Slow and steady wins the race." Plus, you'll get to your destination safely!
- Put your mobile phone away so you are not tempted to talk or text while driving.
- Put a safe distance between your vehicle and the vehicle ahead in case sudden driving maneuvers are necessary. (Be aware of vehicles behind you as well!)
- When you need to slow down or come to a stop, tap the brake pedal lightly versus hitting the brakes.
Be Safe!
